Angels to the Animals

Serving Lake Norman Communities

ANIMAL RESCUES of all varieties have grown in the Lake Norman area due to the overwhelming need. Each has its own unique character, mission, and genesis. Angels to the Animals began with a fortuitous encounter between local animal lovers residing in Denver in June 2021 and grew into a neighborhood effort via outreach on NextDoor. “We were driven by the ever-growing demand to help needy, neglected, or abused dogs, cats and, occasionally, other animals in Lincoln County, and we became a non-profit organization in January 2023.” They were inspired by Mickey Mack, a local man they refer to as their ‘lead angel.’ For six years, Mickey had been providing food, water, fresh straw and shelter to dogs at their residences, who lived on chains or were kept in small, confined areas without proper shelter, hygiene, medical attention, food or water.

The Board of Directors, four passionate animal loving women, describe themselves and their volunteers as intrepid, devoted, and fiercely committed individuals who, in rain, freezing cold, or blistering sun, continue to care regularly for nearly twenty dogs onsite, not to mention those in foster care (currently 18) awaiting adoption. “Once we meet an animal in distress, it’s impossible to turn away. It has been said that rescue is not just a verb; it’s a promise. Fortunately, the overflowing kindness and generosity of donors and volunteers allow us to meet most of these needs, and we collaborate with other animal welfare groups, helping each other as much as we can.”

In addition to the sweet and grateful dogs, there are unwanted kittens and cats – oh, so many – who are feral or have been ‘dropped off’ on roadsides to fend for themselves, ending up on private properties. “Their numbers, of course, grow exponentially. We trap, neuter, release, provide medical care, as needed, foster and adopt them whenever possible.”

Occasionally, the Angels meet other domestic animals living in unsuitable conditions. “Once, we cared for a pig named Isabel who is now living a happy and somewhat lavish life at a pig sanctuary. For a duck, we provided a clean shelter, small swimming pool and built a fenced area where she could play safely and do what ducks do.” Regardless of the species, the Angels provide food and fresh water, shelter from cold and heat, spay and neuter, medical care, flea/tick and heartworm prevention, walks, toys, playtime, and lots of love. “Our stories are both heartbreaking and heartwarming. The tears of joy at seeing the transformation from ‘sad to glad’ are abundant, and we love our happy tales/tails!”

In 2023, Angels to the Animals provided spay and neuter for thirty-three dogs and 200 cats, along with medical exams and care, as needed. Eighty cats were trapped, neutered, and released, and thirty dogs and 120 cats were adopted. “In 2023, we offered daily to several times per week care for fifteen onsite dogs, and we worked with Heart of the Carolinas to build fences for chained dogs.”

What keeps them going? “Without the ongoing waves of support from individuals, local businesses, and cooperation from other animal welfare organizations in the area, we could not survive. The LOVE and COMPASSION from all the angels in our community who become part of our team sustain us. Whether it’s big or small, doing something is better than nothing at all.”

The financial needs are ongoing. “Our Lincoln County community is unbelievably involved and committed to contributing in so many ways, as well as valued donors beyond county lines. AttA organizes fundraisers and adoption events like the Treasured Tag Sale, Vets and Pets, Denver and Huntersville Dog Supplies, Painting with a Twist, Coolers for Cats, frequent neighborhood food drives, holiday portraits with pets, monthly raffles, and other community events with something for everyone, and it’s all great fun. Local businesses like Two Trees Sports Bar and Grill (Bingo nights), Lake Norman Brewery (photos with Santa & adoption events), and Giovanni’s restaurant (Pizza and Pasta for Paws) all help to raise money.”
